Havard F. "Buck" Townsend, 93, of Coatesville, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at the Brandywine Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Jane Hanna Townsend who passed away in 2012. Born in West Grove and raised in Cochranville, he was the son of the late Willis and Bertha (Hershour) Townsend.

Buck proudly served in the US Army during WWII as a Staff Sergeant with the Occupational Forces in the Pacific Theater. He was employed by the International Mill Service (IMS) of Coatesville as a Foreman. He was a member of the Skerrett Masonic Lodge #343 F & AM of Cochranville.  Buck was also a member of the Christiana American Legion Post 865 of Christiana, PA.

Buck was a family man. In addition to being a loving husband, Buck was a devoted father and fun loving grandfather and great-grandfather. Some of his fondest family memories would include holidays, most notably Christmas Eve, many trips to the beach and even just a visit from his loved ones. He was a wonderful, caring man who would help anyone in need. He could often be found tinkering in the garage on his cars and working on projects. Many would visit him there over the years to chat or seek advice. His garage door was always open. He had a passion for racing which included spectating and driving in younger days. He was proud to be a Ford Man. He enjoyed watching baseball and supporting the Phillies along with his grandchildren on the field. He was a regular at the Little Chef to which he would take a daily walk and make friends along the way. Once inside he enjoyed the camaraderie of friends both old and new.

He is survived by two daughters; Peg Proudfoot of Parkesburg and Sheryl Townsend of Coatesville, seven grandchildren; Kelly Franciscus (Jeff), Kristee Pluck (Ivan), Bridgette Williams (Brian), Brian Dougherty (Jenn), Kim Strawderman, Beth Townsend and Lindsay Townsend, eleven great-grandchildren; C.J and Savannah, John and Sean, Kendall and Josie, Vincenzo and Viviana, Jayden, Zoey and Cheyanne. Buck is survived by his brother Bill Townsend (Hazel). He was preceded in death by his son Gerald E. Townsend (Pat), his sister Genevie L. Chesnet (Bub) and his brother Roger N. Townsend.

The family would like to give special thanks to Tim Proudfoot who always showed his dedication, love and support to Buck throughout the years.

My condolences to the family. I worked at Lukens as  a Pit Foreman when I had the pleasure of working with Buck. I knew if there was a problem I could rely on Buck to help out in any situation. We had nice talks together about NASCAR and other races. Buck you were a great coworker and good friend. You will be missed.

I grew up on Charles Street with the Townsend family as my next door neighbors.  Until I married and moved away, Buck was always present in my life. So many wonderful memories.  I was always invited to ride along to the races, to McDonalds, to the DairyQueen.  It was as if I was the 4th child in the family.  I always felt loved and cared for in the Townsend home.  Even after moving to Texas, Buck and Janie with their friends, stopped by for a few hours on their travels just to say Hello.  What a great day that was.  Tim and I feel blessed that Buck was in our lives.  He will be deeply missed.

My condolences to the family.  I firt met Buck in 1963 when our family moved to our new home on Madison Steet.  Over the years Buck was very kind and friendly to our family and I was very happy about that and this showed me what a great person he was.  If he saw you outside he would always stop and say a few words to you just to see how you where doing and just to say hello.  I feel blessed to have know Buck and in his passing he will be reunited with his wife Jane as they both will be looking down on there children, grand children and great grand children from heaven.

Sorry to hear of Buck's passing he was certainly a fixture on Charles St. I enjoyed many moments hanging out with Jerry and everyone when I was growing up. He was a master with mechanics. Many times the officials at the midget races would make him teardown Jerry's engine because they just couldn't believe the car could go that fast!! My prayers are with the family he will be missed.

Peggy & Sheryl, my mom notified me over the weekend that you dad passed.  I miss Charles Street from the good old days.  Not the current days.  BUT he was a life long resident of Charles Street (I had 50 years).  Your Dad was a joy to chat with.  Mornings I would leave for work (this was over 6 years ago since I moved) Buck would be out in the garage and I would stop and say hello and and chat a little before I headed down the alley to work.  He was leaving to head down to the Little Chef.  And yes, the garage door was always open.  In younger years he would always be in the garage doing something, everyday.  Loved when the "Boss" was started up.  From one Ford person to another, rest in peace Buck!!!
