John Ernest Spence, Sr., 73, of Newark, DE, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the Compassionate Care Hospice, St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, DE. Born in Wilmington, he was the son of the late James H. Spence, Sr. and Mildred M. Houg Spence.
John was an area resident all his life. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1961. He was stationed in Guam from 1964 to 1966 and proudly served during the Vietnam War onboard the USS Aircraft Carrier Hancock.
He was employed as a splicer with the Diamond State Telephone Co. and also Weaver Pole Line Co.
John was a life member of the VFW Post #475 of Newark, DE. He was an avid football fan and was extremely pleased to see his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles, win the Superbowl.
He is survived by three children; John E. Spence, Jr. and wife Teresa of Claymont, DE, Michael Spence and wife Stephanie of Palm Bay, FL, and Tammy Coffey and husband Richard of Claymont, DE, six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and two siblings James H. Spence, Jr. of Ocean View, DE and Jeannine M. Spence Brackin of Dundee, FL. He was preceded in death by his grandson Michael Ratliff.
Funeral services will be private. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to any local Veterans Administration of your choice.

So grateful to have known Uncle Johnny. I will always remember him as a very smart man who could tell a funny joke. RIP Uncle Johnny.
