88 Years
New Holland, Pennsylvania

Justus M. “Jay” Hogeland, 88, a seven year resident of Garden Spot Village in New Holland, passed away Wednesday afternoon, October 21, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.  Formerly a 58 year resident of Feasterville, PA, he was the beloved husband of Marion Ryan Hogeland with whom he shared nearly 65 years of marriage.  Born in Huntingdon Valley, he was the son of the late Justus M. Hogeland, Sr and Jessie Stalford Hogeland.

Jay served in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute for 18 months.  He was then employed for 33 years by Western Electric as a supervisor.  Through his work at Western Electric, in 1978 Jay was selected to serve a term as Vice Chairman of the Industrial Advisory Board for the Montgomery County Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC).  He also served as a volunteer of Feasterville Fire Company for many years.

Jay spent his life living out his faith in action.

He was passionate about his love for God and people.  A 60 year member of Somerton United Methodist Church, Jay served in various administrative roles but he was most enthusiastic about his mission work, often inspiring his family to join him on mission trips.  He volunteered with Appalachia Service Project (ASP) for over 25 years and traveled with UM Volunteers-In-Mission to Belize and Puerto Rico.  When he wasn’t on a mission trip, Jay would be found engaging others in conversation.  Seeing all people with the eyes of God, he valued every individual independent of position or background.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Karen, wife to Allen Keller of Coatesville and Bonnie Hogeland of Horsham, PA, two granddaughters Jenny Manthey (Timothy) of Coatesville, and Katie Behringer (Andrew) of Drexel Hill, great grandchildren Ryan and Naomi Manthey, and one brother Donald J. Hogeland of Spring House, PA.  He was preceded in death by a sister Marie Ann Pletcher.  He had seven nieces and nephews.  He was looking forward to the birth of his third and fourth great-grandchildren in March 2016.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service at the Garden Spot Village Chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave.,New Holland,  PA on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 11:00am with visitation from 10:00am to the time of the service.

Condolences

May the Peace of Christ Jesus sustain you in these days.  I have only known Jay for a short period of time but it was enough to realize that he was a good man, a kind person, and a strong family man.  I am grateful for the blessing of knowing him even in a limited capacity.  May your memories and experiences together inspire you in the days ahead.

Jay was such a caring, loving and positive gentleman that would do anything for anyone.  Even through all his health issues he was always positive.  He was one of my favorite residents at Garden Spot Village. Everytime I would see him, I would ask him how he was and he would smile and say better now that I have seen you and he would give me a big hug and a kiss and say "love you girl"!  I loved to see him with his family they are a special group of people, they had such a bond that can never be broken.  My condolences go out to his entire family and anyone that was close to him..he will be missed.  Rest in peace Jay!  Love you to the moon and back again!

I am a transport driver for at home services with Garden Spot Village.  I enjoyed getting to know Jay this past year.  I also enjoyed getting to know his family.  We talked about lots of things but his favorite subject was his family.  May God's love give you comfort during this difficult time.

My heart is so sad to have lost one of my favorite PD patients.  I am blessed to have gotten to know Justus over the past few years as one of his PD nurses at LGH. Justus always had a smile on his face when I saw him and always had a great big hug on stand by.  He had such a kind heart and I always enjoyed seeing him.  I am thankful to have seen him recently when he was in and will always remember his kind soul.  Many thoughts and prayers to his family.  All of the PD girls at LGH send our love.  We will surely miss you my friend!

Karen, Alan and entire family,

Prayers and thoughts are with you, during this difficult time. Along with the many outstanding acomplishments; serving the community as a volunteer fireman and serving the country as one of our true heroes, show how Jay was a truly remarkable soul. May the Peace, Love and Light of Jesus guide you through the celebration of his life, and guide Jay through his new journey.

Dave, Larisa, and Eugene
