A Tribute to Tabitha

Tabitha was our miracle, our fighter, our gift.

There’s a poem many of us know called The Dash by Linda Ellis. It reminds us that the small line between our birth date and the day we leave this world represents how we lived — and how we loved — in between.

For Tabitha, that dash was only 35 years long. But what a dash it was.

At just 9 years old she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma — and she fought bravely and won. In 6th grade came Ewing sarcoma. In 8th grade, congestive heart failure. While other kids planned sleepovers and dances, Tabitha planned treatments and surgeries. Hospitals became her second home. Doctors and nurses became extended family.

Yet she never stopped fighting.

For more than 25 years her life was a battle most of us cannot imagine. But her story was never just about illness — it was about courage, resilience, and choosing to live even when living was unimaginably hard.

In 2017 came a miracle: a heart transplant. That new heart gave us more time — more birthdays, laughter, conversations, and memories added to her dash. And even when that heart began to fail, she still refused to surrender.

Over and over doctors gave statistics.Over and over Tabitha proved she was not a statistic. She was determination. She was grit. She was hope in human form.

Her dash taught all of us how to fight, how to endure, how to appreciate ordinary days, and how to love fiercely because tomorrow is never promised.

Some lives are measured in length.Tabitha’s was measured in strength.

Though 35 years feels far too short, when we truly look at her dash we see something extraordinary — a life that refused to quit, a heart that kept beating beyond expectation, and a young woman who showed everyone what bravery looks like.

Tabitha did not choose the length of her dash, but she showed us exactly how to live one.

Her fight here is over, but her impact is not. The strength she showed lives on in all of us, and the love she gave will echo far beyond these years.

Her dash was not defined by sickness. It was defined by strength. It was defined by love.It was defined by a fighter who never stopped fighting.

And what a beautiful, powerful dash it was.

We love you, Tabitha — and we will carry your dash with us for the rest of ours.
