Samuel W. Johnson departed this world on January 1, 2026 in the comfort of his home. Born on June 6, 1924 in West Grove, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Samuel Fremont Johnson and Margaret Clara Mattson Johnson. He has been reunited in eternal peace with his beloved wife, D. Marie Mattson Johnson, and his daughter, Faye Mattson.
Sam attended Unionville High School. He was a proud veteran, serving in the Army during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge. After returning from the war, he started an impressive 44 year career at Lukens Steel Co. in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, a testament to his unwavering work ethic and commitment to his profession. Upon retiring, he spent 39 years enjoying the fruits of his labor: spending time with family and engaging in various activities that brought him joy and fulfillment.
Sam was an enthusiastic member of the Cruisin' Classics Car Club, reveling in the camaraderie and joy that automotive appreciation brought to his life. He won dozens of car show awards with his prized 1957 Chevy Bel Air. Sam was also an avid gardener, growing and sharing various fruits and vegetables throughout the year.
Sam was a devoted family man whose love and kindness enriched the lives of many. He is survived by his beloved daughters, Patricia Paylor from Delaware and Lois Dodd from Oxford, Pennsylvania. His son, Samuel E. Johnson, alongside his wife Brenda, of Peach Bottom, Pennsylvania, continues the family tradition of strength and resilience. Among his cherished siblings are Shirley Christiano of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and M. Jane Weaver of Paoli, Pennsylvania.
Sam's legacy does not end with his children and siblings; he was a proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren, a loving great-grandfather to 27 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandfather to 10 great-great-grandchildren. Each of these relationships spoke volumes of his warmth, affection, and the indelible mark he made on future generations.
He was preceded in death by his wife D. Marie Johnson, his daughter Faye Mattson, along with two grandsons, three sons-in-law, and nine siblings, all of whom surely welcomed him with open arms.
A funeral service honoring his life and legacy will be held on January 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Friendship United Methodist Church located at 123 E Friendship Church Rd, Coatesville, PA 19320 with visitation starting at 10:00 am with the service to follow at 11:00 am.
