We want to share the passing of our dear aunt, Leila B. Ferguson Herr, 92, formerly of Hershey. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at the Glen of Willow Valley Communities. She was born in Martin’s Corner in Chester County, PA to the late Jack and Sara Ferguson. She was married to Paul Herr for 38 years, recently celebrating an anniversary on May 9.
They attended Westminster Presbyterian Church, Lancaster. PA. Leila was a 1950 graduate of the former H. Scott High School in Coatesville, PA where she played clarinet in the Marching Band. She was also a member of the high school swim team. She continued her education at Penn State University, graduating in 1954 with a teaching degree in Physical Education and began her teaching career at Lebanon High School in Lebanon, PA. She later earned her Master’s Degree in Secondary Guidance from Millersville University and left teaching to become a guidance counselor at Middletown High School until her retirement in 1985.
In retirement, Leila took courses and became a real estate agent in the Hershey area. Leila and Paul enjoyed camping and traveling all over the United States and Canada. In retirement, she and Paul also traveled to Florida each winter, enjoying time with family and friends. Summers were always spent with family and friends at the family cottage on the Chesapeake Bay.
She is survived by her husband, Paul and by three nieces who were like daughters to her: Susan Albright and husband Jim of Mountville, PA, Cheryl Eckman and husband Greg of Oxford, PA and Nancy Swarr and husband Harold of Strasburg, PA. She is also survived by Paul’s grandchildren, Stephen Herr and Lauren Herr of Ohio and Paul’s nieces, Anne Herr of Gap, PA, Ellen Walters of Long Island City, NY, and Susan Herr of Farrell, PA. She was pre-deceased by her parents and brother and sister-in-law, John and Phyllis Ferguson as well as her stepson, Robert Herr.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Glen at Willow Valley for all their years of love and care for Leila and support to us. We also want to thank Caring Hospice of Lancaster for their loving care and support during Leila’s end days.
