David Ernest Townsend 89, of Parkesburg PA, passed away on September 15, 2025. He was born in Westwood PA on September 17, 1935 to the late Robert Rettew and Harriet Chambers Townsend. The family moved to Parkesburg when Dave was 5 yearsold, across from Crystal Springs Park. He graduated from Parkesburg High School in 1953. He literally walked uphill both ways.
In his youth, he enjoyed roller and ice skating at Crystal Springs Park. His love of playing baseball resulted in him being part of the 1950 Chester County Midget League Championship team. He continued to play baseball and softball for the Parkesburg VFW for several years as an adult. He served in the Army, stationed in Germany June 1958-June 1960. While in the service, he married the love of his life, the late Evelyn Lamkin Townsend in 1958. They shared 63 years of marriage.
He worked for the Reading Railroad and then Conrail until his retirement in 1995. He was actively involved in Parkesburg VFW Post 4480, serving as Commander 1967-1968 and playing in a dart league for many years. He was an avid golfer who was proud of his hole-in-one obtained at Moccasin Run Golf Course. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Until the past few years, he gardened and loved his blueberry bushes. While indoors, he spent his time doing various puzzles. Until a few months before his passing, he enjoyed sitting on his daughter’s front porch waving to the cars that drove by. He was affectionately dubbed “the High Street Waver”.
David is survived by a daughter, Ellen Townsend Brown (husband Lennie), 2 granddaughters Meghan Brown (husband Ross Pini) and Paige Brown (partner Erik Horn), 1 grandson Graham Pini.
