Charles L. (Derry) Baker

Charles L. (Derry) Baker, 87, of Coatesville, passed away on November 1, 2011.  He was a resident of Harrison Senior Living.  He was born in 1923 in Coatesville to the late John and Marjorie Echoff Baker.

He is survived by his three daughters, Charlotte (Timothy) Mascuilli, Donna (Vince) Gulli, Terry (Edward) Simpson, six grandchildren, Dana (Ed) Trimbur, Melissa Gulli, Michael (Caitlin) Gulli, Kylene Simpson, Kyle Simpson; 4 great-grandchildren, Ashley Stewart, Bobby Stewart, Danielle and Sydney Trimbur, two brothers, William Baker and Thomas Baker.
Charles was the husband of the late Doris Bunting Baker, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage until her death in 2009.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers, John and Robert, sister Dot Henry, and his granddaughter, Monica and Mascuilli Stewart.
He was an outstanding athlete in football, baseball and basketball for Coatesville Senior High School.  In 1942 he was selected to the All Chestmont, All Suburban and All State Football teams as a fullback.  In 2005, he was inducted into the Coatesville Sports Hall of Fame.
Upon graduation in 1943 from Coatesville Senior High School, he enlisted in the Navy (Seabees).  During WWII he was stationed in the Aleutian Islands.  After an honorable discharge in 1946, he played professional baseball for the Boston Braves organization as a catcher.
Before his retirement he was employed at the Budd Company in Eagle as Maintenance Supervisor.  He was a member of the VFW Post 287 in Coatesville.
Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 107 S. 17th Avenue, Coatesville PA 19320 on Friday, November 4th at 11 a.m. with calling hours from 10 until 11 AM.  interment will be held in the Upper Octorara Cemetery in Parkesburg.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charles' memory to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd at the above address.
