Carol Jean (Mason) Mathis, 70, of Atglen, PA, at her home peacefully went to be with her Lord on May 19, 2025. Born in Atglen, PA, she was the daughter of the late Blanch Miller Mason and Harold Joseph Thompson. She was devoted to her sons and grandchildren.
Carol was a 1974 high school graduate of Octorara Area High School. She was employed by the Coatesville Veterans Administration in 1975. She was given the opportunity by the Veterans Administration to continue her education by earning a degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She graduated nursing school from The Center of Arts and Technology in 1995, at the Brandywine Campus in Coatesville, PA. She loved her nursing career but retired in 2013.
Summary of Life
Carol had a love for spiritual music and would often listen to her favorite spiritual hymns. She loved devoting her time to duties for the church. She was a member of MT. Zion AME church and attended regularly. During her time as a member of the church, she was passionate about hosting noon day prayer, being the reader at Wednesday night Bible study and loved to study the Bible. She was on the Sunshine committee, a member of the steward board, president of the Anna Mary Hopkins Missionary Society, and an integral part of the finance committee. She was adamant about upholding her duties within the church even as her health declined.
Carol had many hobbies. Anything from knitting, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, gardening, reading and creating decorations (Crafty Carol) for holiday or special events. She loved to cook. While there were many recipes she enjoyed making, her potato salad and coleslaw were the most requested amongst family and friends.
She is survived by her sons Christopher A. Mason (Sara) of Inverness, FL, Kyle L. Mathis (Cherie) of Lititz, PA, Kirk T. Mathis of Atglen, PA., 7 grandchildren, her sisters Patricia Mason of Roy, NM, Joan Dunham of Oxford, PA and Denise Williams of Sicklerville, NJ, a bonus sister Karen J. Miller who was her cousin, of Lancaster, PA and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother Blanch Mason, father Harold Thompson, siblings: Richard Paul Mason, Mary Emma Mason Burns, Theodore Raymond Mason, Margaret Mason, and Dorothy Washington, her niece Yolanda L Mack.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. from the Mt. Zion AME Church, Atglen, PA, with visitation starting at 9:00 a.m. Interment to follow in the adjoining church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Mt. Zion AME Church.
