Peter M. Nunn, age 87, passed away on October 17, 2022. He was born in Zanesville, OH on October 16, 1935 to the late Horace A. and Henrietta (Marvel) Nunn.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Elaine (Scott), with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage this past June; two sons, Steven E. Nunn (Kelly), of Fenton, MI and David S. Nunn of Valley Cottage, NY; as well as two grandsons, Bradley T. Nunn and Tyler S. Nunn (Lauren Shields).

Pete was preceded in death by his two siblings, Albert E. Nunn of Lake Forest, CA and Virginia N. Marr of Silver Spring, MD, and by his beloved stepfather, James H. Thompson.

Pete graduated from Newark High School in Newark, NY in 1953 and entered Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA where he earned a bachelors degree in accounting.

Shortly after graduating in 1957, he and Ruth were married. He began a 40 year career at Lybrand, Ross Bros., and Montgomery in the firm’s Philadelphia office. Pete took a two year hiatus from Lybrand to serve in the US Army in Fort Holabird, MD.

After thirteen years at Lybrand, Pete moved to the firm’s Washington D.C. office as a partner at Coopers & Lybrand, from which he retired in 1997.

While he was in Washington, Pete was active in the business community and served as the President of the Washington Rotary Club from 1986 to 1987.

Pete enjoyed hiking, camping, reading, traveling, and serving on the boards of multiple organizations, including Columbia Hospital for Women and the National Iron and Steel Heritage Museum in Coatesville. He liked to spend time at his second home at Wintergreen, VA.

Pete’s special love was his alma mater, Susquehanna University, where he served on the Board of Trustees for 35 years. He was recognized with its achievement award in 1985, a service award in 1997, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the board when he retired in 2019.

I am very saddened to hear of Pete’s passing.  A wonderful person, a true professional and a respected and admired business partner of mine.  I first met Pete in 1969 when I interviewed for a position at Lybrand, Ross Brothers and Montgomery.  Many years later and as fellow partners in Washington, DC, together we spent endless hours dealing with challenging business issues.  Pete always had a calm attitude, the right approach and the right answer.  He was a great mentor for me and for many others at the Firm.  My sincere condolences to Ruth and the rest of Pete’s family.  He will surely be missed by all who knew him and worked with him. Rest in peace my friend.

Dear Mrs. Nunn and the entire Nunn family,

I was very sad to get the notice of Pete's passing. My name is Ahmad Shamim, and I retired this past June as a partner at PwC after 38 years at the Firm. I thought I would pass on a light hearted memory of Pete, one that I shared many times with lots of laughs over the course of my career.

In 1984, I was a college intern in Coopers' 1800 M Street office in Washington, all of 21 years old. Back then of course, we all wore suits and ties to work. Well, one typically sweltering DC summer day, I wore a short sleeved button down shirt with my tie. I was teased mercilessly by the "senior" staff (all of 22 years old) for having such a terrible sense of fashion. I'll never forget walking down the hall of our office that day, and approaching me was this very senior partner, Pete Nunn, wearing HIS short sleeved button down shirt and tie. He looked at me as we passed, gave my attire a quick once over, and gave me a little smile and a nod, as if to say, "I like your style kid."

I had a few professional interactions with Pete as I grew more senior in the Firm and he was unfailingly patient, kind and quick to laugh.

I wish you all the very best.

Dear Ruth and Family,

Judy and I were saddened to hear of Pete's passing.  He was truly a special person in C&L's Washington DC office.  I have such great memories of seeing Pete at his desk, very early in the morning, reading the newspaper.  Rarely did anyone beat him into the office.  I also have great memories of all the partner and office events we attended with you and Pete.  I will always cherish his counsel, mentorship, and our friendship!

Our sincerest condolences,

Warren and Judy Martin

Dear Ruth and the Nunn family- Mary Ann and I were so saddened to hear of Pete’s passing. He was such a great partner and mentor to me as a younger colleague and definitely helped me make partner. Pete always showed me and many others the RIGHT way to be an CPA. He was always so kind, helpful, and patient with the young team members to whom he was “ showing the ropes”. He was one of a kind and we learned so much by simply watching and emulating his actions. What a fine man and partner role model. We all benefitted from his leadership. Please know that Mary Ann and my own thoughts are with you and the family at this time. Sent with highest regards
