John R. Newswanger Sr., 83, of Coatesville passed away peacefully on December 25, 2020 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was the beloved husband Anna Marie (Diviney) Newswanger with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.

Born in Coatesville, he was the son of the late Carl I. Newswanger and Lula (Hilton) Newswanger and brother of the late Carl F. Newswanger. A 1955 graduate of Parkesburg High, John served in the United States Army Reserve. John worked most of his adult life at Lukens Steel in Coatesville, retiring as a foreman in 1987. He was most recently employed as a security guard at West Chester University, retiring in 2014.

John, “Poppy”, always enjoyed supporting his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, concerts and celebrating their many achievements. John was very active throughout his life and loved fishing, bowling, and playing golf, tennis and racquetball. He was the proud assistant coach of the 1994 Philadelphia Archdiocesan Girls Softball Champions. In July 1992, John made a hole-in-one on the current 4th hole at Coatesville Country Club. Most of all he cherished time spent with his family, especially annual trips to Ocean City, Maryland.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by two children: John R. Newswanger Jr. and wife Heather of Downingtown and Jane Ventrella and husband Michael of Coatesville; 8 adoring grandchildren: Erica, Kelly, Shane, John III, Katie, Michael, Liam, and Chloe; 3 sweet great-grandsons: Benjamin, Zachary, and Angelo John. He is also survived by his identical twin brother and favorite sports adversary James R. Newswanger and his wife Judith of Coatesville; Sister-in-law Frances Newswanger of Bethlehem; two nieces and two nephews, as well as great nieces and great nephews.

Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of life taking place at 3:00 p.m. at the Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main Street, Parkesburg, PA 19365 on Saturday, January 2, 2021. There will be a visitation period from 2:00 p.m. until the start of the service. Interment will be at a later date.
