Barbara A. Gilbert, 81, of Valley Township, passed away on December 25, 2019, at her home. She was the widow of the late Marcus W. Gilbert Jr., who passed away in1993. Born in Coatesville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Taylor Schmidt.

She attended Coatesville schools and worked at Newberries in Coatesville, Family Dollar in Coatesville and Ames in Thorndale. She was a former member of Westwood Union Church and later attended Wagontown Chapel.

She was always the organizer for family gatherings. She was a known “poker shark” and served the best fried chicken and stuffed peppers.

She is survived by her sons Marcus W. (Carrie) Gilbert III, Edgar “Chubby” (Mary Campbell) Gilbert, Brian Gilbert and Stacy Gilbert, all of  Coatesville, grandchildren Jonathen (Felicia Middleton), Cory, and Jessica (Kevin Dowlin) Gilbert of Coatesville, and Rebecca and Joshua Gilbert also of Coatesville, a great-grandson Wesley Dowlin of Coatesville. Siblings John “Buddy” Schmidt of Christiana, Patricia Hatfield of Florida, Richard (Nancy) Schmidt of Narvon and sisters-in –law Joyce Schmidt of Coatesville, Jackie Schmidt of Quarryville, and Alberta Schmidt of Coatesville and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by siblings Ralph Schmidt, Robert “Bobby” Schmidt, William “Billy” Schmidt, Sister-in-law Margaret Schmidt, and Brother-in-law Rodger “Bill” Hatfield.

We would like to thank the Hospice Nurses and Aides, with a special thanks to Amy and Carrie who Barbara became especially fond of.

RIP Mrs. Gilbert, you will always be my favorite Sunday school and Bible school teacher.  I would like extend my deepest condolences to Chubb and family.
