The world lost a warrior.  Clara P. McCarraher, 74, of Gap, died on January 7, 2018 in the company of her daughter Donna, her son Jay, and other family members at Paoli Hospital, where she was the recipient of loving care provided by the hospital staff.

Born in Honey Brook, PA, Clara was one of 8 children. She was the daughter of Charles and Anna Moore. She was a licensed practical nurse (LPN) and worked at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Coatesville, PA, in a psychiatric unit. She also worked at the Harrison House in Christiana, PA and Tel-Hai in Honey Brook, PA, providing care to the elderly.

In the early eighties, she began her career as a driver for the Amish, which led to close ties with the community, including her beloved friend/sister, Sadie Glick, and her family.

Why a warrior? Clara said what she meant. Her sharp tongue was tempered by the deep love she gave her family and friends.  If her children had to pick two words to represent their mother, it would be “Her way,” because that is how she lived her life. She taught her children and those around her the meaning of friendship, generosity, helping others, and not being afraid of standing up for what you believe and what you think is right, no matter the cost. Her grandchildren, Cody, Kaylyn, Sydney, Katelyn, Dominic, Gracie, Olivia, Paige, and Desmon, will carry with them forever the memories of how she showered them with love, gifts, and free advice!

While her children have lived their adult lives North Carolina, she was embraced by her family and many friends in Lancaster County. To all of you, her children say thank you for being with her when we were not, sharing meals and laughter, and giving her sense of community.  Our mother was seldom alone and for this we are extremely grateful. Finally, we’d like to thank Johnny Walton and his family for the kindness they showed our family during mom’s last moments at Paoli Hospital.

Clara is survived by her children Donna (and her partner Patti) and Jay (and his wife Melissa); her siblings Bette, MaryAnn, Larry, and Linda; and nieces Tonia, Michelle, Sherri (known to Clara as “Shurry”), Lori, and Shannon.

Mom, your job here is finished. You have done very well. You were loved more than you could ever imagine and will be missed everyday by those whose many lives you have touched.

The Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 4 PM at Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg, Pa with visitation from 2 until 4 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can the family requests donations to the Water Street Mission in Lancaster PA.

Dear Donna and Jay'

The world has lost a truly wonderful person, your Mother was there for me when I needed someone so many years ago. She did so many things for Nathaniel I could never repay her if I wanted too.

She will sorely be missed by many. I know she's up there hugging her "chocolate chip" right now! Give him one for me also. Thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Love Cindy
